Alcohol is a central nervous system depressant that has immediate effects on the body, like intoxication (feeling drunk) and hangovers (unpleasant aftereffects from drinking).

Years of moderate to heavy drinking can cause liver scarring (fibrosis), increasing the risk of liver diseases like cirrhosis, alcoholic hepatitis, fatty liver disease, and liver cancer. If you have up to seven drinks per week, the added risk to your heart appears to be minimal. If you go above that amount, however, the risk rises exponentially (see «What is a standard drink?»). While the above tends to reflect a severe AUD, there are different types of alcoholics. For example, there is a category sometimes known as the young adult alcoholic. In this situation, you might not drink every day, but instead, you tend to binge drink. You’re not a severe alcoholic in this case, and you probably don’t have a physical dependence, but you might be on the road to developing a more significant problem. Nearly one-third of American adults are “excessive” drinkers, but only 10% of them have alcohol use disorder (alcoholism).

As I’ve written about before, a number of studies have demonstrated health benefits with lower amounts of drinking. But if you drink too much alcohol (especially at inopportune times), there may be significant harms as well. Just how these balance out remains a matter of some debate and controversy. In the beginning stages of alcoholism, drinking escalates and the individual develops an increased tolerance for alcohol.
